The Great Alone by Tim Voors

Thoreau this is not. This inspiring memoir documents the 2,600 mile journey Voors made on foot on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) from Mexico to Canada in 6 months. If you want to satisfy your wanderlust, this is a good read; likewise, if you're nostalgic or yearning for a simpler time, read this for some reframing. Voors admits quite readily, and early, that the wilderness kicked his ass; this was not some romantic "stroll through nature". Voors comprehensively shares the logistics, mental strain, physical strain, equipment, camaraderie, natural beauty, and fearful encounters he has on the trail; it also includes his photography and some of his artwork. Worth noting: Voors is a Dutchman traveling from Europe to the States to accomplish this personal challenge; he advises Americans to enjoy and take part in the expansive natural beauty that we are privileged to, which denser, more populated Europe cannot. Worth the read. Enjoy.
